Copley Point Acquires Ground Source Heat Pump Portfolio

26 June 2019

Copley Point, the independent asset management and principal investment firm, has announced the acquisition of a portfolio of ground source heat pump (GSHP) systems from The Renewable Design Company. This landmark transaction marks a significant step forward in Copley Point’s commitment to investing in durable physical assets that provide long-term value to society.

The portfolio consists of a mix of completed sites and sites in development, with all GSHPs installed in new-build retirement homes across the UK. Upon completion, the portfolio is expected to comprise approximately 70 sites, providing heat to over 3,000 homes.

All GSHP systems are, or will be, accredited under the UK Government’s Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive, guaranteeing inflation-indexed income for 20 years from the installation of each GSHP. This unique investment is the only portfolio of its kind in the UK and represents a first-of-a-kind transaction for ground source heat pumps as a renewable asset class.

The GSHP systems, designed and installed by The Renewable Design Company Limited, utilize boreholes and buried pipes containing a glycol solution circulated by electrically powered pumps. The systems extract heat naturally existing underground, providing renewable energy that can be used to heat water for radiators, underfloor heating systems, and hot water in buildings. Not only does GSHP technology offer environmental benefits, but it also provides financial savings for users compared to traditional fossil fuel-fed systems. The Renewable Design Company Limited also undertakes full management and maintenance of the GSHP.
